Enrichment Programs

Danforth also offers the opportunity for enrichment in Grades 9 and 10 in English, Canadian Geography and Canadian History. These courses are based on the same course objectives as the Academic level, and student achievement is evaluated at that level. Enrichment opportunities are for students with an aptitude for strong interest in these subjects, offering challenging ways of exploring additional related materials and the opportunity to participate in alternative activities related to the study of these subjects. Students wishing to further their studies in English and the Humanities/Social Sciences in university would benefit from this enrichment preparation in high school.

The Deaf Department

The Deaf Education Department is one of several special education programs that are an integral part of Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute, which offers one of the widest range of courses in the Toronto District School Board.

In the Deaf Ed. Department, students are taught in self-contained classrooms and receive instruction from trained teachers of the Deaf. While integrating the ministry guidelines, each student is assessed individually and an IEP is created to develop and meet their specific needs.

Integration

Students are provided with the opportunity to select courses outside of the Deaf Department with services provided by ASL interpreters. They can choose courses based on their motivation and ability to handle the subject material.

Each year, educators are provided with strategies to accommodate our students in order to better facilitate their education. This is accomplished through workshops, printed information and one on one discussions.

Courses

Subjects regularly taught within the department include:
English
Civics/Career Studies
Geography
History
General Science
Mathematics
Learning Strategies

…with new courses being developed annually.

These subjects are taught using sign language as the principle means of communication.

Through integration, students gain access to an exceptionally wide selection of academic and technical courses such as:

Fine Arts
Electricity
Psychology
Cosmetology
Auto Mechanics
Cooking
Photography
Woodworking
Computer Graphics/Animation
Etc.

After Graduation

Most students spend 4 to 5 years in our program. The individual goals of the students’ help to direct which path they will follow after graduation.

Every year, our graduating students decide to enter the workforce, attend community college, participate in an apprenticeship-training program, or to enter into a Deaf upgrading program, for example at George Brown College. Additionally, some students have pursued education at the university level, enrolling in such institutions as the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Gallaudet University, not to mention various universities in the Toronto area.
