THE CLUBS

CAPUT - Caput, Latin for “head”, is the elected student government that represents the students to the administration and other parties. It is responsible for various events throughout the year, including the annual Grade 9 Barbeque, and all Semi-formals (dances). G.A.A. - The Girls’ Athletic Association promotes healthy and active living, with a primary focus on girls’ athletics. One of the G.A.A.’s highlights is the Carnival they hold alongside the B.A.A. every Spring. B.A.A. - The Boys’ Athletic Association also promotes healthy and active lifestyles, with a strong emphasis on boys’ athletics and school spirit. With the G.A.A., they hold a Carnival later in the year. AfroCan - One of Oakwood’s oldest clubs, AfroCan promotes awareness about African culture and hold a number of events, including the Annual Kwanzaa Banquet. Students and Teachers of Oakwood for Peace (S.T.O.P.) - Another long-lasting Oakwood club, S.T.O.P. has advocated for social justice and peace in all their causes. One of their main events is the Breaking Down the Barriers week, during which many workshops are held to raise awareness about issues like poverty, minimum wage, war, depression, etc. The Drama Society - The Drama Society have always been determined to put on a variety of memorable productions for Oakwood, its members well-familiarized with aspects of fine performance and its pre- and post-production. Art Club - The objective of the Art Club has been to expose Oakwood and the community to the power of art for many years. They paint murals and prepare decorations for special ceremonies, among other activities. Law and Debate Club - A young yet aspiring organization, the Law and Debate Club studies the Canadian justice system and prepares itself for the yearly mock-trial competition against other schools in the TDSB. Oakwood Christian Fellowship (O.C.F.) - This group focuses on the teachings of God and the exploration of Christianity. Hip-Hop Club - From beat-boxing to breathtaking graffiti-style artwork, hip-hop culture is vastly expressed with the positive energy from this creative group. Lady Steppers - A highly sophisticated dance group, the Lady Steppers focus on using the body as a percussive instrument and keeping strong rhythms. Tech Club - The Tech Club allows students to develop their design skills and prepare for a number of competitions. Free the Children - This group concentrates on fundraising for the underprivileged, not only for Third World countries, for example, but for causes in our community as well. Anime Club - From Fullmetal Alchemist to Naruto, the Anime Club is for all “otakus” who get together and share their love of anime. When there is enough interest, they also attend conventions and cosplay (costume play). Reach for the Top - Minds wanting a workout come together and train against other schools in a battle of the brains, knowing random bits of knowledge such as various books authored by Margaret Atwood, the capital of countries all over the world, or random events in history! League of the Super Smash Bros. - This club is home to those nostalgic about the old Nintendo 64 game. Badminton Team/Club - To get an early start on the badminton season, athletes come together and train, or merely have fun. Fashion Association - Meeting several times throughout the year, members gain the skills needed to run a successful fashion show and take self-expression to a whole new level. |
