Special education support is available through the Learning Strategies (GLE) courses to any student with an Identification Placement Review Committee (IPRC) designation and/or an Individual Education Plan (IEP).

All Learning Strategies courses are credit granting courses.   They are offered in grades 9 through 12 and an annual Individual Education Plan or IEP is developed for each student in the GLE program.  The Learning Strategies courses are intended to support students with the content, homework and assignments presented in their subject classes.  In the junior grades, these courses explore learning strategies which will enhance organizational, time management skills and study skills and help students become better, more independent learners and improve achievement in literacy and numeracy.   Students will develop and apply strategies which will encourage self-advocacy and problem-solving.

In the senior grades, these courses continue to build on the learning strategies introduced in grades 9 and 10.  Emphasis will be placed on life-long learning skills such as critical reading and time management.  In addition, these courses help students make a smooth transition to the world of work and/or post-secondary education.

The skills learned in the Learning strategies courses will increase students’ confidence, and be of great benefit to them both in and out of the classroom.
Course Evaluation:

To earn a Learning Strategies credit, students must achieve the overall and specific expectations outlined in the new Ontario Curriculum.  The majority of the evaluation (70% of the student’s mark) will reflect term work.  The remaining 30% will be derived from a final, summative evaluation.  Because each student has unique learning needs, a variety of assessment techniques will be used to generate the course mark:  planner, notebook, and homework checks; questionnaires; written assignments; oral presentations; role-plays; projects; journals; and specific skill development activities to name a few.  The Special Education Department recognizes the individual strengths and limitations of each student.  Every effort will be made to assist each student to reach his/her potential.  Success requires a partnership between the teacher(s), the student, and the home.  Together, we can make a difference!

Space is limited, so please ensure that you choose Learning Strategies on your option sheet if you want Special Education support at Oakwood.
