Oakwood Collegiate is a school community that aims to educate students in an atmosphere which fosters excellence and the maximum development of the student as an individual. All members of the Oakwood community – students, parents, teaching and non-teaching staff – are expected to display a spirit of mutual respect and co-operation.
1. RESPECT FOR SELF
The Oakwood community will work together to develop a positive sense of self and a desire to learn. To accomplish the above, the Oakwood community has the following expectations:
Academic Expectations
All members of the community will:
• Be diligent and committed to their school work
• Come to class prepared
• Participate actively and co-operate in the classroom
• Complete all work and submit it on time
• Be responsible for missed work
• Not plagiarize or cheat in their work
Attendance and Punctuality
All members of the community will:
• Attend school regularly
• Arrive at school on time
• Arrive to all classes on time
2. RESPECT FOR COMMUNITY
The Oakwood community recognizes that it is important to establish a positive atmosphere in the whole school community which is supportive of learning. Consequently, the Oakwood community has the following expectations:
Personal and Interpersonal Behaviour
• Students are to give their names to school personnel when asked.
• Students and teachers will work together to create a positive learning environment.
• All must accept the cultural diversity of our community and show respect for our differences.
• Physical and verbal abuses will not be tolerated.
• Harassment of any kind is not acceptable in the school community.
• The use of profane or improper language is not acceptable.
• Public displays of explicit intimacy are considered inappropriate.
• Students on unassigned periods shall not loiter in the halls.
Personal Equipment and Clothing
• Cell phones and active personal electronic equipment must be turned off and out of sight at all times in the school during the school day. Any student found using a cell phone or other electronic equipment will have it confiscated until the end of the school day. Students needing to use the telephone, may use the phone in the office.
• No head gear, unless religious, is permitted in school.
• Clothing worn by students must be respectful and appropriate of a school environment. Offensive, intimidating, distracting clothing or clothing that conceals identity is not supportive of a positive learning environment.
• No outdoor wear (coats, gloves, etc.) should be worn in class.
• Students can be asked to change certain clothing and/or students can be sent home.
School Property and Events
• Vandalism will not be tolerated and may result in charges by police.
• Attendance at assemblies will be orderly and respectful.
• Spectators at athletic events are expected to remain in designated areas.
• Behaviour at special events will reflect creditably on the school.
• In general, student parking is not permitted on school property and students who do so, do so at their own risk.
• Cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility. Litter inside and outside must be put in garbage cans.
• Compliance with the established “Use of Computers Policy” is expected.
• Lockers are the property of the school and are loaned to students. Administration reserves the right to open student lockers with or without the student’s permission in order to protect the safety, belongings and/or health of others.
• Sports equipment is to be used in the gyms or outdoors only.
2. HEALTH AND SAFETY
It is expected that Oakwood will be a safe and healthy environment for all members of the community.
• Remember: the school is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
• Students should not leave items such as knapsacks unsupervised.
• Fire regulations must be followed precisely.
• Running, pushing, rough-housing are unacceptable.
• Eating is only permitted in the cafeteria or basement.
• Rollerblades and skateboards are not to be used in the school building.
• Bicycles may not be brought into the school building.
• Students should not be in the school after 5:00 p.m. unless they are participating in a supervised activity.
• Snow should remain on the ground and not be thrown at people or vehicles.
• In case of classroom accidents, students must follow their teachers’ directions carefully.
• For your own safety, students should inform the office of any medical conditions, such as allergies, diabetes, etc.
3. ILLEGAL BEHAVIOUR
• The use of drugs and alcohol is unacceptable and illegal.
• Smoking is not permitted anywhere on school property – including the school grounds – and may lead to suspension and/or fine.
• Physical assault, bullying and harassment are illegal and may lead to criminal charges and/or exclusion (see the TDSB Safe Schools Brochure).
