Activity Day
Our annual Activity Day is organized in order that students have an opportunity to experience a day of co-curricular activities. This year, Activity Day will be held on Friday, January 9, 2009. Each year we distribute a booklet with information for both parents and students, outlining details of all activities offered that year.
One of the goals of education in Ontario is that the individual “gain the knowledge and acquire the attitudes that he or she needs for active participation in Canadian society”. Our Activity Day focuses parents’ and students’ attention upon two aspects of Canadian society – the use of leisure time and the importance of physical fitness.
Bayview Middle School has always offered students many lunchtime and after-school activities designed to cater to the students’ need for physical exercise and the use of leisure time. Examples of these are House League Sports, Chess Club, Cross-Country Running, Band, plus many more.
However, time and space limitations restrict the nature and length of these activities. In an effort to provide more for our students, Bayview continues to incorporate an Activity Day into its curriculum. During Activity Day students are exposed to a wide range of experiences not available during the regular instructional day. Students may spend time on a subject of interest such as visual arts or drama. They may also develop a lifelong hobby by choosing activities such as bowling/skating or cooking.
Traditionally, almost two thirds of our students have selected skiing/snowboarding during Activity Day. Skiing is a popular Canadian pastime and good exercise. By offering skiing during school time, we can get non-skiers interested at a reduced cost. We can give regular skiers a chance to improve their skill level. All skiers receive lessons at their own level from a qualified instructor.
This Activity Day is an interesting and valuable part of Bayview’s curriculum. We are proud to offer this to our students. Attached is the package of activities (pdf file - 77 kb) available last year.

Terry Fox Walk/Run
This is an annual event at Bayview Middle School. We participated in our twentieth school-based Terry Fox Walk/Run on Thursday, September 25th, 2008. This year marked the 26th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope and all schools across Canada were invited to participate in their own fundraising activities on that day.
At Bayview, students took part in activities to show their support for Terry Fox and his heroic effort to raise funds for cancer research. Last year over 4,000 schools across Ontario participated and raised over $9.8 million. This clearly indicates that Terry’s legacy is being passed on to the next generation. This year at Bayview we had our most successful run and contributed $6,419.00. We are very proud to announce we have raised over $95,666.00 since 1989 and have been among the top twenty fund-raising schools in Ontario.
Students who brought in donations before Thursday, September 14th, were called down from their seventh period class to walk or run around the school grounds with their classmates. They were supervised by teachers, support staff and parent volunteers. Remaining students will continue in their classes and take part in activities such as discussions, art or writing activities on this theme.
Donations were collected in advance by students from friends and family members. Door-to-door canvassing was not to take place. Each student who brought in a donation received a special tattoo, a bookmark and a “vintage” Terry Fox pin.
We are certain that all children who participated in this event found it to be a meaningful and rewarding experience.
