Bill 3 – Sabrina's Law
Bill 3, otherwise known as Sabrina’s Law, new Provincial legislation enacted January 1st, 2006 to protect anaphylactic students in school settings.
Anaphylactic shock is a severe systematic allergic reaction which may be fatal, and it occurs when an allergic individual is exposed to a particular substance such as peanut products, nuts, eggs, fish, or is stung by an insect such as a bee, hornet or wasp.
Under the new law, school boards across Ontario are required to establish and maintain policies to deal with students at risk of anaphylaxis. In addition to implementing strategies that reduce the risk of exposure to anaphylactic causative agents in classrooms and other common areas, the law requires principals to do the following:
- ensure that, upon registration, parents, guardians, and pupils shall be asked to supply information on life-threatening allergies
- maintain a file for each anaphylactic pupil of current treatment and other information, including a copy of any prescriptions and instructions from the pupil’s physician or nurse and a current emergency contact list
- develop an individual plan for each anaphylactic student in consultation with the parent/guardian.
If a doctor has advised you that your child may require epinephrine, adrenaline, EpiPen® or Twinjet® for an anaphylactic reaction, you and your doctor are asked to complete the forms entitled ADMINISTRATION OF PRESCRIBED MEDICATION (Form 536A) and MANAGEMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL CONCERNS (Form 536B). Both of these forms are available in the office and should be completed and returned to the office as soon as possible. In addition, we also require a copy of the medical prescription for your child’s file, a recent photo of your child to attach to Form 536B, two up-to-date epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPen® or Twinject®) for your child: one of which must be carried by your child throughout the school day, including any excursions or athletic events, and a second auto injector to be kept in the school office.
Effective as of September, 2006 Bayview Middle School became a peanut/nut free environment in an effort to decrease some of the risk for our anaphylactic students. Please assist us by not sending any food or beverage products that contain peanuts and/or nuts to our school.
