Principal's Message

The Principal's Message is intended to keep you up to date on what has been happening in the classrooms, corridors and across the campus of Central Tech. Here are just a few stories of such events …

Our opening assemblies featured guest appearances from Trey Anthony, from the infamous, da Kink in My Hair. Trey's message was simple and powerful: each of us has a gift. Her questions were: Do we have the spirit? And her challenge: Are we willing to do the work? Read what our students thought.

Jordana Schaefer's piece is one Central Tech exemplar of such gift, spirit and work ethic. If I Can, You Can encourages other students, especially those beginning at CTS to not lose their focus. This year Jordana is combining her work in the Special Art Program with her interest in Fashion to polish her portfolio for post secondary applications. Congratulations Jordana on your work to date.

Our connection with Trey and with the TDSB Equity Department also meant 100 students were able to attend Duane and Trey's new production, Secrets of a Black Boy at the Danforth Music Hall. Next week CTS students will have the chance to travel to Stratford to see A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Leadership students have been hard at work organizing the Grade Nine Welcome and our Be True to Blue Day. Even the rain could not dampen our spirits as the Senior Boys' Football Team met East York in an unheard of final score of 1-0. Senior Boys' record to date two wins - one loss. Our Juniors are in working on a building season - stay tuned as they hone their skills! Senior Boys' Soccer two wins - one tie and Junior Boys' Soccer two wins - one loss. Boys' Varsity Volleyball: two wins - two losses. AND our women: Senior Girls' Basketball 1 win - two losses and Junior Girls Basketball one win-two losses. Keep up to date on our sports records!

Central Tech students have also raised money for Terry Fox, attended the TDSB Me to We Day at the ACC and participated in the Boys2Men Hoopdome Day. Last Friday, students from the Senior Carpentry Class were featured on Breakfast Television as the custom built podium constructed according to station specifications was "revealed"! Another testimony to Central Tech craftsmanship.

Cosmetology Field Trip

On Thursday October 29th the gr. 12 Cosmetology class visited George Brown College at their Yorkville campus. We were really excited because we were going to participate in a Special Effects demonstration and lesson. Two of our girls, Ester Kwon and Evita Manwearing volunteered to undergo these changes. We couldn't believe the transformations that took place within the hour. The special effects were created by a variety of techniques and products specific for this genre of make up. We were also treated to a tour of the school where we came upon two of our ex-students Michelle Zheng and Abby Luong who are enrolled in a profession Make- Up program.
Photos of the trip can be seen here.

Technological Studies Department Introduces
Two New Course Catalogues

The Technological Studies Department has produced 2 new course catalogues to assist students in making informed course selections. There is a Grade 9/10 catalogue that lists the technical courses available to students in those grades, as well as course descriptions.
Click on the image to view the pdf.

The senior catalogue is divided into 3 sections: The first contains information on multi-credit Technological Majors Packages, designed for students who have a strong interest or career goal in a specific technical field. The second section has course descriptions on the wide variety of single credit technological courses offered at Central Technical School. The third section provides details on other Technological Studies programs such as Specialist High Skills Majors and 1 year OYAP courses. The back of the catalogue contains an admission application, if students are interested in attending our school. We invite you to take a look.

INTRODUCING THE NEW FORGE
Central Technical School's
LITERARY AND ARTS MAGAZINE

This particular issue of The Forge marks two significant departure points from previous issues. First, this is the first time that The Forge has been published on the Central Technical School website, which in itself is very exciting. Secondly, the publication’s format and mission have been altered from a school newspaper to a magazine, showcasing literature and the arts at CTS. The Forge is dedicated to highlighting the abundance of talent within our student population. So, browse through these pages and enjoy a wealth of wonderful poetry, experience the entertaining and often poignant short stories, absorb the compelling and thoughtful opinion pieces, take a peak at some fabulous photography and admire some highly stylistic and creative artwork, each and every piece created and submitted by our own CTS students.

C.T.S. RELAY FOR LIFE

The biggest cancer event found a home at Central Tech. this year on Friday, May 22nd. This 12 hour, non-competitive relay, invited students, teachers, staff, family, Community Watch Officers and friends to form 10-person teams and take turns walking around the track. Each participant (84 of them this year) paid a $10 registration fee and then raised funds. The goal for our first event was $7,000 which we easily surpassed. A total of $7,891.00 was raised!

Good morning Toronto, Welcome to Toronto's #1 Morning Show,
City TV's Breakfast Television. Check IT OUT!

Those words were broadcast live from the Plumbing, Carpentry and Electrical Shops of Central Technical School in the early hours of March 10, 2009 by City TV's Breakfast Television. It was a spectacular event that had the construction students of CTS arriving as early as 5:30 in the morning for a chance to showcase their incredible skills on live television. In talking to the crew of Breakfast Television, they were all astounded at how many shops and advanced projects the CTS students undertake throughout the year. And why not? CTS has some very special programs like OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) and SHSM (Specialist High Skills Majors). Something to be very proud of and something to promote. City TV's Jennifer Valentyne interviewed some of our very own CTS students and got an insight into the projects and skills learned in our shops. Jennifer even got to participate hands on in the carpentry shop. It was a great day and a great way to promote our AMAZING school to students, contractors and future employers. The world got an insight of where to look for outstanding future apprentices ready to enter the work force with the skills at hand to do a great job.Way to go CTS!
