So what exactly is the Literacy
Launch?
This
semester the Central Tech Literacy Committee has expanded to include
representative teachers from all departments in our school. Students
in all subjects and all grades will be practising summary to underscore
learning in each subject area. Working with Denis Maika and Elaine
Hine from the provincial Leading Student Achievement Project (LSA)
and our TDSB literacy coach, Lorne Kulak, we are examining samples
of CTS student work to develop anchor papers. Late starts afford
us the chance to work across grades and departments and to include
our community partners from faculties of education and agencies
like Pathways to Education in common training to ensure our students
the best possible instruction. In addition to this work, several
CTS teachers along with teachers from our Family of Schools (SW6)
have enrolled in an additional qualification program in Adolescent
Literacy afforded through a partnership with York University. Summary
writing is one of the exercises on the Ontario Secondary School
Literacy Test (OSSLT) that takes place Thursday, April 8th.
As
We End Semester One...
As we end Semester 1 of the 2009 – 2010 school year, staff
and students wish Ms Karin Fuessel all the best in her transition
to Vice-Principal at Sir Robert L. Borden. A long time CTS educator
and champion, Ms Fuessel has given generously to our school. In
her farewell address, she reminds students to never give up on their
dreams. We wish her all the very best.
Please join me in welcoming our new Vice-Principal, Ms. Robin Kirk
seen here exercising her technical skills at our Curriculum Fair
last week.
Ms. Kirk is a graduate of the University of Waterloo, a Math and
Science Specialist and most recently a Math coach in the south-east
region of the TDSB.
Ms Kirk assumes Ms Fuessel’s portfolio and will be working
with teachers in both technical and academic areas to build programs
to support our high skills majors (SHSMs) in Construction, Hospitality
and Transportation.
Last week Grade 9 students wrote their EQAO Math assessments on
Thursday and Friday. This work is evaluated as a part of the Grade
9 Math mark. Our CTS Literacy Team is readying to launch our 2010
Campaign for the April Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).
Working with our TDSB Literacy Coach Lorne Kulak and Denis Maika
from the Leading Student Achievement Project, the team is focussing
our energy on teaching students the necessary skills in summary
in all subject areas.
This January CTS is one of the SW6 secondary schools to pilot One
Stop Media Boards. This technology has allowed us to provide online
polling for staff and students to choose this year’s yearbook
covers.
At Central Tech evaluation is not all about pen and paper! Students
from Mr. Muller’s culinary class provided dinner for the homeless
at St. Peter’s Church. As a part of their summative semester
work, construction students are busy literally building the brand
new Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club. For ongoing progress, watch
this website. Similarly our Grade 12 Portfolio Art Students
hosted a spectacular show in our Central Gallery last week. Our
congratulations to each of these students and to their instructors
who share their passion.
Central Tech now offers 5 exciting
1 year Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs
Once again this year Central Technical
School is offering 5 one year OYAP programs in the following trade
areas: Carpentry, Plumbing, Cook, Electrical, and Auto Service/Truck
and Coach. The OYAP programs at Central Technical School are ideal
as school-to-work transition programs.

Central Technical
School Student wins Design Competition!
Central Tech student Kelly Nguyen’s
T-shirt design has been chosen as the competitor shirt for the 2010
Toronto District School Board’s Skills Canada Competitions.
Central Technical School will host a number of contests at this
year’s event taking place on March 10 and every competitor
will be wearing Kelly’s design. Congratulations Kelly!
Central
Tech's Shaquille Baptiste Carries Olympic Torch!
Shaquille Baptiste - A 17-year-old student at Central Technical
School, Shaquille was selected in August at the Cabbagetown Community
Centre to carry the torch with 20 other volunteers from the centre.
“Shaq”, as his friends call him, is a Grade 12 student
planning on taking business at George Brown College. Although he
is sharing the torchbearing duties with 20 others, he is “excited
and thrilled to be even touching the torch” as he is set to
carry it on Dec. 18 at 11:50 a.m. in Newmarket. Shaq worked during
the summer at the CYC as a summer camp councillor, but credits his
summer employment opportunities to the 40 hours of community service
that he did prior to his summer job. Central Tech is so proud that
Shaq is carrying the Olympic Torch that we will be showing his run
live during our festive assembly.
What's Happenning at CTS
On
Monday December 14, Grade 10 students Rakesha James and Winnie Lin
were presented with gift books sent by Mr. Chris Spence, Director
of Education. Our principal, Ms. Freeman presented the awards, and
the girls were congratulated by Vice-Principal Mr. Shafransky and
Teacher-Librarian Ms. Rubinstein. Both award winners are avid readers,
and frequent users of our school library.
Muskoka Woods Field Trip On November 9-11, 2009, the recreational leadership class
along with selected grade 11 & 12 students were given the chance
to go to Muskoka Woods Sports Resort in Rosseau, Ontario.
We were able to organize and lead a number of activities in an environment
we wouldn’t have experienced without the trip. We also participated
in cooperative & team building challenges such as the giant
swing, a low and high ropes course, a zip line, rock climbing, beach
volleyball, golf, skateboarding, soccer, disc golf and hosting a
radio broadcast.
Most of us conquered our fear of heights and together, we learned
how to gain trust in others and work as a team. We met new people
and did things we would never get to do. We grew as leaders and
individuals through the Muskoka Woods experience and gained skills
that we wouldn’t be able to accomplish in a school environment.
Thanks to Ms. Franklin, Ms. Rycroft, Mr. Waldie and Mr. Rasmussen
for dedicating their time to have the experience with us! Click
here to see photos of the trip.
Cosmetology Field Trip
On Thursday October 29th the gr. 12 Cosmetology class visited
George Brown College at their Yorkville campus. We were really excited
because we were going to participate in a Special Effects demonstration
and lesson. Two of our girls, Ester Kwon and Evita Manwearing volunteered
to undergo these changes. We couldn't believe the transformations
that took place within the hour. The special effects were created
by a variety of techniques and products specific for this genre
of make up. We were also treated to a tour of the school where we
came upon two of our ex-students Michelle Zheng and Abby Luong who
are enrolled in a profession Make- Up program. Photos
of the trip can be seen here.

Technological
Studies Department Introduces
Two New Course Catalogues
The Technological Studies Department has produced 2 new course catalogues
to assist students in making informed course selections. There is
a Grade 9/10 catalogue that lists the technical courses available
to students in those grades, as well as course descriptions.
Click on the image to view the pdf.
The
senior catalogue is divided into 3 sections: The first contains
information on multi-credit Technological Majors Packages, designed
for students who have a strong interest or career goal in a specific
technical field. The second section has course descriptions on the
wide variety of single credit technological courses offered at Central
Technical School. The third section provides details on other Technological
Studies programs such as Specialist High Skills Majors and 1 year
OYAP courses. The back of the catalogue contains an admission application,
if students are interested in attending our school. We invite you
to take a look.

INTRODUCING THE NEW FORGE
Central Technical School's
LITERARY AND ARTS MAGAZINE
This particular issue of The Forge marks two significant departure
points from previous issues. First, this is the first time that
The Forge has been published on the Central Technical School website,
which in itself is very exciting. Secondly, the publication’s
format and mission have been altered from a school newspaper to
a magazine, showcasing literature and the arts at CTS. The Forge
is dedicated to highlighting the abundance of talent within our
student population. So, browse
through these pages and enjoy a wealth of wonderful poetry,
experience the entertaining and often poignant short stories, absorb
the compelling and thoughtful opinion pieces, take a peak at some
fabulous photography and admire some highly stylistic and creative
artwork, each and every piece created and submitted by our own CTS
students.
C.T.S. RELAY FOR LIFE
The
biggest cancer event found a home at Central Tech. this year on
Friday, May 22nd. This 12 hour, non-competitive relay, invited students,
teachers, staff, family, Community Watch Officers and friends to
form 10-person teams and take turns walking around the track. Each
participant (84 of them this year) paid a $10 registration fee and
then raised funds. The goal for our first event was $7,000 which
we easily surpassed. A total of $7,891.00 was raised!
Held May 4th to 6th at Waterloo’s Rim Park the Ontario Skills
Competitions showcases the best technical skills in the province
at both the secondary and post secondary level. Central Tech has
always been a strong competitor in these contests and this year
was no exception. After capturing an incredible 33 medals, including
14 Gold at the Toronto District School Board competitions on April
7th , the school sent a strong contingent to Kitchener/Waterloo
and achieved some really positive results. Competing at this province
wide event were:

On May 23 to 26 the Canada wide Skills contests took place in Charlottetown,
Prince Edward Island. This competition was to determine the best

This is proof, yet again, that the best technical students come
from CENTRAL TECH.
Good morning Toronto, Welcome to Toronto's #1
Morning Show,
City TV's Breakfast Television. Check IT OUT!
Those
words were broadcast live from the Plumbing, Carpentry and Electrical
Shops of Central Technical School in the early hours of March 10,
2009 by City TV's Breakfast Television. It was a spectacular event
that had the construction students of CTS arriving as early as 5:30
in the morning for a chance to showcase their incredible skills
on live television. In talking to the crew of Breakfast Television,
they were all astounded at how many shops and advanced projects
the CTS students undertake throughout the year. And why not? CTS
has some very special programs like OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship
Program) and SHSM (Specialist High Skills Majors). Something to
be very proud of and something to promote. City TV's Jennifer Valentyne
interviewed some of our very own CTS students and got an insight
into the projects and skills learned in our shops. Jennifer even
got to participate hands on in the carpentry shop. It was a great
day and a great way to promote our AMAZING school to students, contractors
and future employers. The world got an insight of where to look
for outstanding future apprentices ready to enter the work force
with the skills at hand to do a great job.Way to go CTS!
