Transition Years

Donview provides a Transition Years Program that supports early adolescents along the continuum from childhood to young adulthood and from dependent towards self-directed learner. The Core Teacher program is an integral part of our ongoing efforts to provide a safe, stimulating and enjoyable environment. In addition to a challenging academic program, Donview offers students many opportunities to develop skills necessary for success in all areas of their lives.

The school serves a diverse population of almost 410 students. Over 38 different languages are represented; the largest groups being Bengali, Chinese, Urdu, Persian, Tamil, Spanish, Arabic and Korean. The school is organized on a grade team model. The grade team teachers meet regularly to plan common programs and methods of assessing student progress. Focus programs in both ESL/ESD and Special Education are available. Literacy, mathematics, science and technology are key curriculum priorities. Student use of current technology is fostered through our Information Resource Centre, Design and Technology lab, Information Technology lab, Movie lab, and core programs. We are very proud of our Instrumental Music programs (band and recorder) as well.

Parental support and involvement are major elements in the success of the transition learner. Communication with our parents is strengthened through students' use of the daily planner and opportunities for parents to meet with the school staff and administration to discuss school issues and programs. We encourage parental involvement in the daily life of the school.

Donview is a Gold Eco School and participates each year in the Toronto Community Clean-up program. We are also involved in charity fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation, Heart and Stroke, Adopt a Village, Second Harvest Food Bank , Unicef and the White Ribbon Campaign.

School Focus Areas from the School Improvement Plan

The School Improvement Plan focuses on four major areas:

  1. Literacy
  2. Numeracy,
  3. Transitions and
  4. a Safe School Environment.

Literacy
In literacy we assess our data on academic achievement by grade, gender and curriculum strand each term. We use a number of assessment methods for gathering data. Our staff has been involved in professional development activities involving balanced literacy programming, using higher order thinking and questioning skills and moderated marking for writing assessment.

Numeracy
In numeracy we also assess our data on academic achievement by grade, gender and curriculum strand each term. As with literacy we use a number of assessment methods for gathering data. Our teachers have been working with our Family of Schools Math coach planning curriculum units, common assessments and using an investigative problem solving method to address the "Big Ideas" in mathematics. All math teachers have been given manipulatives to use while teaching, for students who learn in different ways.

Transitions
Our grade 6 teachers work with grade 5 teachers from our feeder schools (Fenside, Ranchdale, Rene Gordon, and Roywood) to ensure a smooth transition into middle level education at Donview. At the other end, our grade 8 teachers work with our two high schools (George S. Henry and Victoria Park CI) to ensure a smooth transition into high school. This promotes student success and eventual graduation as students follow their individual career pathways – Apprenticeship, Work Force, University, or College.

Safe School Environment
We are continuing to educate our students on safety issues in the school and our community. Our teachers and guidance department provide support through various programs and activities such as VIP, Empowered Students Partnership (ESP), and character education initiatives. Staff and students at Donview work together to provide a supportive and safe environment for all.
