Downsview Secondary School

Student of the Week

Week of November 21, 2011

Michel-Shawntel A.

Downsview, for the week of November 21st, your Student of the Week is Leslie T. Leslie is in the eleventh grade at Downsview.

Leslie’s nomination comes from a few teachers. Let’s go to Ms Prinn first: “Leslie is an outstanding individual. I remember teaching Leslie in grade nine - she attempted to make a very unique and beautiful piece of jewellery out of a black and gold plate she found at home. Her imagination teamed with her outgoing and friendly attitude making her a joy to teach and to work with. She is an original member of wegreen, and has helped on many different campaigns. From cleaning up our community, earth hour, earth days, Friday lights out, assemblies and more, Leslie has been there. Her two appearances on Global television were outstanding and show that Leslie works well under pressure! I am so proud to have known Leslie over the years and I've seen her grow and become so strong. I believe she is now a part of four different and busy committees at Downsview. Go Leslie!”

Mr Chapman, Leslie’s art teacher adds this: “Leslie is hard working, committed, and dependable.  She is one of my top students.” And Ms de Jersey has this to say: “Leslie is one of the founding members of Dare 2 Inspire, and she is a powerful force. Her creative ideas led to many initiatives last year, including bracelet making as a fundraiser. She is not afraid to get her hands dirty; whether she is making pancakes, walking 16km with a brick in hand, or painting banners, Leslie gets the job done. Like Ms Prinn, I have seen Leslie grow from an interested joiner to a capable leader. Leslie is a treasure to DSS.”

And there is further proof of Leslie’s widespread commitment to excellence. Her term one marks average 82%, an impressive feat for any student. Her academic achievement is all the more impressive, however, given her deep involvement in life at Downsview.

Downsview students, you are fortunate to have Leslie as your peer. Check out the media link at to see Leslie and partner Michel-Shawntel A. on Global News, representing Downsview and showing off our art and tech masterpiece, Sakura. She did us proud. Thank you Leslie for all your contributions to our school, and congratulations once again on your win as Student of the Week.
