Downsview, for the week of February 27th, your Student of the Week is Angela R.
Angela is in the eleventh grade at Downsview.
Angela's award has been on the works for two months now, and it is a pleasure to finally announce her worthy win. Her nominations came forward in late December from two teachers. First, here is what Ms Reavell-Roy has to say: “Angela was in my ESL Drama class. She gave 110% every day. She is friendly, approachable, smart and has a great sense of humour. She came to Canada in March of 2011 and has assimilated herself beautifully to Downsview. She cares about those around her and takes pride in her work and in her learning. She is always there to help her fellow students as they learn English.” And Mr Zhang adds to the praise with this: “Angela came her as a newcomer to Canada and as soon as she started here, she became a role model in my ESL Math class. Her attendance has been outstanding and she works very hard in class. She has improved her English considerably since she started. She has also laid a solid foundation for future success in studies in math. Angela is a fantastic student.”
There are many tests as to the elements that create character. One is certainly adaptability. If there is one truth about life it is the inevitability of change. Coming to a new country, learning its language and culture represents one of the biggest changes that can happen to a person. Many are overwhelmed and resist the change for quite a while before adapting. When everything is new and foreign, there is an understandable human impulse to shy away and hold onto all that is familiar. Angela, however, has seen her opportunity and has embraced the change and forged a place for herself in our school, our community and our country. She is a brave and proud ambassador for others that face similar challenges, and the fact that she has taken on this role is proof of her generous soul.
Angela, we are lucky to have you in our midst and we look forward to your successes in the future. Congratulations once again on your win as Student of the Week.
