Downsview Secondary School

Student of the Week

Week of June 4, 2012

Lilian D.

Downsview, for the week of June 4th, your Student of the Week is Lilian D.
Lilian is in her final, graduating year here at Downsview.

Downsview, as we near the end of the 2011-2012, we try to ensure that we choose especially carefully, and not leave out any worthy Student of the Week candidates. When Lilian’s name came up, many people said, “she’s great, but she won already, right?” When we checked our history, we discovered the terrible truth: Lilian had never been crowned Student of the Week! Seeing Lilian exit Downsview without this title would have been a crime.

Thank goodness Ms Murphy came forward with this nomination: “What a girl! I am very pleased to say a few words about Lilian. As the manager of the Girls Soccer team, Lilian was very helpful at practices and games. Lilian has a very positive and calm demeanour and is simply lovely to be around. Last semester, she was a peer helper in my dance class and really demonstrated the qualities of a true leader. She was organized, helpful, and had a great rapport with all of the students. As her teacher and coach, I am so proud of Lilian's accomplishments and will miss her dearly as she ventures off to University next year. Her countless hours of volunteer work in both athletics and arts at Downsview have not gone unnoticed and she is very deserving of student of the week honours!”

Mr Hum adds: “Lilian leads by example and does so in a quiet way. She always gets things done behind the scenes and doesn’t need to be the center of attention.” Mr Hum’s words point to one of Lilian’s greatest assets: her modesty. Lilian is a do-er, but feels no need to announce this quality to the world. She simply gets things done. As a student in Positive Peer Culture class, Lilian merged this philosophy of doing good with her natural empathy and kindness. She listened well, active listened well, and provided comfort and thoughtful comment throughout the course.

We finish the praise with our Vice-Principal, Mr Fawthrop, who says:  “She was an exemplary employee in last summer’s Power Your Future program; she has certainly earned the position again this summer. Her responsible, professional, reliable approach combined with her kind-hearted and compassionate nature was a great value in supporting summer students as they earned credits. Make no mistake, Lilian has a bottom line, but it is enforced with empathy and warmth.”

Lilian, we will miss you at Downsview and we wish you all the best. We thank you for your involvement and the leadership you have provided. Congratulations once again on your win as Student of the Week.
