Ecological Literacy

The Ecological Literacy component of EcoSchools provides students with the essential knowledge and basic skills of ecological literacy. We want all Simcoe students to gain a better understanding of human-environment relationships.

Three components are key to explaining the concept of Ecological Literacy.

Sense of Place invites our children to explore and really see and appreciate our immediate surroundings, both natural and built, and beyond them, the larger landscape. At Simcoe we are working to rejuvenate our school property both inside and out, and to encourage our children to value the benefits of our community's natural beauty.

Ecosystems Thinking examines how nature works and how natural and human systems are interconnected and interdependent. We invest in field trips to Hillside and Kortright nature teaching centers for active learning experiences.

Human Impact weighs the consequences, both helpful and harmful, of human interventions into natural systems and invites individuals to participate in finding solutions. We actively and continuously focus our teachings on reduce, reuse and recycle.

At Simcoe, we celebrate Earth Day every year and caring for our environment is a key Simcoe value we share with our community.
