EcoSchool Energy Conservation
 |
Canada,
along with the United States, is one of the highest energy-consuming nations in
the world. And, although we derive nearly 60% of our electricity from
hydroelectric (water-powered) sources, by also burning fossil fuels (oil and
natural gas) for energy, we contribute to smog and its health effects, acid rain
and its damage to forests, lakes and buildings, and greenhouse gas that effects
global climate change. |
At Elizabeth Simcoe we focus on Energy Conservation.
Lights and Equipment:
- Lights are turned OFF when not required;
- Computer monitors are either turned OFF or computers are put to SLEEP when
not in use;
- Computer printers and other electronic equipment is also turned OFF when
not in use;
- Only the most energy efficient equipment is purchased (e.g. Energy Star).
Heating:
- Windows and curtains are closed at the end of the school day;
- Space around vents on walls or window sills is kept free of obstruction;
- Doors to the outside of the building are not left open longer than necessary;
- Room temperatures have been reduced by 1º in the winter;
- Classroom heating filters are regularly cleaned for highest efficiency.
In addition to environmental costs, we focus on
Energy Conservation because every new dollar spent on energy is taken out of
the budget that also pays for cleaning and maintaining the school. We are
expecting to reduce our energy consumption by 5-10% by adhering to the
EcoSchools Energy Conservation Standards.
