EcoSchool Ground Greening

School Ground Greening Logo Set in the beautiful Scarborough enclave of Guildwood Village overlooking Lake Ontario, Elizabeth Simcoe enjoys a neighborhood environment rich in woodlands, scenic walkways and the architectural treasures of the Guild Inn grounds. Built in 1963, our school faces the challenges of any 40-year-old: although still relatively young, a new focus is required to maintain its strengths and enhance its attributes.

At Elizabeth Simcoe, our long range School Ground Greening plan is on:

Greening for the Future:

  • Continuing to support the work of our Gardening Club, which has worked hard in removing dangerous thorn bushes and toxic weeds, reshaping flower beds and planting bright new perennials and greenery;
  • Supporting our School Council "EcoTeam" of parents and staff that work to create and maintain, even during summer months, our wildflower garden and to continue focus on caring for our school grounds.

Learning Grounds:

  • Focusing our EcoTeam on creating a diverse natural environment for play and learning;
  • Nurturing our native wildflower front yard garden;
  • Creating seating areas to enable us and our community to enjoy our gardens;
  • Maintaining our school grounds as attractive and comfortable surroundings that reflect our community standards;
  • Supporting the development of a teaching garden in the Kindergarten area.
School ground greening offers us a myriad of benefits, from improved quality of well-being, social interaction, play, teaching and learning, to building stronger ties within the school community.
