EcoSchool Waste Minimization
Canada is the second-highest per capita producer of municipal solid waste
in the world. As the largest school board in Canada, TDSB is dedicated to
minimize waste and has set standards for all schools -- minimum day-to-day
practices and behaviours that schools are expected to support. We work hard
at Elizabeth Simcoe to take every opportunity to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Here are some of our initiatives:
Reduce:
-
paper use by photocopying on both sides of paper whenever possible;
-
paper use by using a sibling list when sending printed information home to parents;
-
food-related waste by focusing on "peanut-free" nutrition along with a waste-free lunch and snack system.
-
paper use by having newsletters and meeting minutes posted on the school website, so parents can choose to view them online.
Reuse:
- paper by organizing a "Re-Use Box" for half-used paper that can be used for rough work and art projects;
- mugs, glasses, plate and utensils are used by staff to set an example to avoid using disposable dishes as much as possible.
Recycle:
-
all paper products using a grey box recycling system in our offices and classrooms;
-
bottles, cans and juice boxes using a blue box container recycling system;
-
food waste with a renewal of our composter program;
-
pizza lunch recycling of all boxes and milk cartons.
