School Routines and Policies

Mission Statement »

Pick Up and Drop Off :

If you are picking up your child, on a daily bases, please be kind enough to wait outside the exit doors in the playground. One of our expectations for our students is to develop an increasing sense of independence and responsibility. We would request that parents who walk their children to school, drop them at the class line and meet them outside their exit doors. If you are picking up your child early, students must be signed out by a parent at the main office if they leave before 3:20 PM. Please note that all doors are locked to gain entry please ring doorbell located at the front doors.

School Visits :

As part of our "safe school policy", when visiting the school, or classrooms, you will need to check in at the office when you arrive and sign our visitors’ register. If you intend to walk through school areas, a "Visitor’s Badge " must be worn.

Use of The Office Telephone :

The school telephones are used for business purposes and are in constant demand. We request that calls home be only for Emergency situations.

Dresscode :

All students are expected to wear clothing that is neat, clean and appropriate to the school environment and the weather.

  • This is our third year with a dresscode
  • Navy blue bottoms (pants, shorts, skirt); no blue jeans
  • White top (long sleeves or short sleeves)
  • A navy blue or white sweater or sweatshirt may be worn over the white shirt (should have a crest on it)

Clothing that is provocative or carries unacceptable messages is not permitted.
Hats, caps, hoods and bandannas are not to be worn inside the building except for religious purposes. Outdoor coats and winter boots are not to be worn in class. In the interest of health and safety, children must wear shoes in class.

Late Policy :

Punctuality is an important life skill for all of our students to learn. From Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5, we expect all of our students to be on time.
Students who are late for school MUST SIGN IN AT THE MAIN OFFICE and get a late slip.
Parents will be notified if children are often late and strategies for solving the problem will be developed through a combined effort between the home and school.

Absences :

  • Please call the school and leave a message reporting the absence(395-2420)
  • If a student is absent, and there is no note or telephone message, a phone call home will be made
  • If you wish your child to leave during the day, you must send a note or call the office. When picking up your child other than at the regular dismissal times, please come to the school office.

Illness :

In fairness to all, please do not send your child to school if there are definite signs of illness in the morning. We do not have the facilities or the personnel to care for sick children at school. Good health is necessary for effective learning. Students who are ill should receive medical attention and should not attend school until they are healthy. Students who become ill or injured during the day are to let their teacher know immediately. Our policy is to get students who are ill home as soon as possible. Our practice will be to call parents at home or at work to inform them of the necessity for the child to be picked up. For this reason, it is important that parents keep work and emergency phone numbers current.

  • If we cannot reach a parent, we will call the emergency number
  • If the student is in any medical danger and we cannot contact a parent, an ambulance will be called
  • If your child will be absent from school, you must call:
416-395-2420-press 1 and leave a message with your child’s name, classroom, reason for the absence, your relationship to the child and the date and time of your call.

Medication For Students :

Students who require medication to be administered at school must have a completed medication consent form signed by their family doctor. (Students must not have medication in their bags. This includes aspirin etc. All medication must be handed in to the main office.)

Out of School Events :

  • All students must have an excursion permission form signed by a parent or guardian and must have a medical information form completed

Physical Education :

  • It is recommended that students wear shorts or jogging pants/tights and running shoes on gym days

Textbooks, Supplies And Instruments :

We attempt to provide all of the necessities for a good classroom program. From time to time, your child may request special supplies from you. It is your choice whether or not to provide these materials. In addition, students are provided with textbooks for their use during the year. Students are asked to treat all books and school supplies with care and should an item be lost or damaged, a replacement charge will be levied.

School Library :

It is very important that our students learn how to access and use resources and manage information. Our library is open to classes during the school day, and for general student use at other times. We encourage all of our students to become proficient users of all library materials and to explore the many avenues of learning available here at Firgrove. Please note that a charge will be applied to materials not returned to the school library.

Lunch Routines :

Our lunch hour is from 11:30AM to 12:30 PM. Students must be registered each year. Students who are eating lunch at school must remain on the school grounds. After eating lunch, students are taken outside for a portion of the time. For safety reasons, registered students wishing to be excused on a specific day must bring a note, signed by the child’s parent to indicated permission to leave school property.

All students are expected to follow all regular school rules regarding behaviour and respect during the lunch hour. Failure to remain on school property and to follow the rules may result in losing the privilege of staying at school over the lunch period.

Homework :

Homework is designed to provide positive experiences for students, encourages the development of self-discipline, good work habits, and positive attitudes towards independent study and lifelong learning. Homework enables parents to see what their children are learning at school, and provides opportunities for teachers, parents and students to develop and maintain good homework practices. We would like to enlist the support, and invite the participation of parents as partners in the learning process. All students are encouraged to spend some time each day on "homework". The following chart is suggested as a general guide. It should be noted that times will vary from individual to individual, at various times within a school year.

Grade Most Evenings
JK - 3 10 - 30 minutes
Grades 4 - 6 30 - 60 minutes

Evaluations :

  • Parents are encouraged to contact teachers throughout the school year
  • There are 3 formal reporting times

Lost and Found :

  • Our Lost and Found Box is located outside the office. Please check the Lost and Found on a regular basis if you have lost an item. Unclaimed items are turned over to a charity at the end of each term.
