LIBRARY
The school library offers an inviting place to visit and borrow favourite
books and materials.All classes from
Kindergarten to Grade 6 have a regularly scheduled time to visit the
library to borrow books and materials. Students are also welcome to
visit the library in small groups or individually during open library
periods.
This year there has been a change to the library schedule. Classes from grades 1 to 6 will have a class in the library ONCE every TWO weeks. Students will begin by borrowing 1 to 2 books and may work up to a maximum of 4 books at one time. (The maximum may be exceeded, however, if extra books are required for project work.) These books should be returned or renewed by the following library period at the latest.
If students wish to exchange their book(s) before their next scheduled period, they may do so:
• anytime the librarian is in the library, (with their homeroom teacher's permission)
• after school
• during afternoon recess (but students must arrange this ahead of time)
This year we are on a 10 day rotating cycle. (see calendar in September package). Because of this rotating schedule, library will not fall on the same day each week–see below for which day of the cycle your child's class has library. Please help your child to remember to bring his or her books to school on library day by marking it on your calendar at home.

The Garden
Avenue PS Library Web Page has a wealth of links to appropriate
learning resources for students. TDSB staff in the Library Learning
and Resources department is constantly working to provide access to
quality online databases and Internet sites from safe, dependable sources
which will assist students with all areas of their learning. Aside
from the library catalogue, which can only be accessed from school,
the resources on the web page are available to students at home or
from the public library. Access to some of these online resources such
as Grolier Encyclopedia and the Toronto Star Pages of the Past, have
been purchased by the TDSB and as such are password protected when
accessed remotely. These passwords are available from Garden’s
Teacher-Librarian.
During the winter and early spring, our school participates in the
Ontario Library Association's annual ‘Forest
of Reading’ program.
This program provides opportunities for our students to be exposed
to high quality Canadian literature and to vote for their ‘favourite’ book.
At Garden, students may participate in the Blue Spruce program, which
are read-aloud picture books for students in Kindergarten to grade
2. Students in grades 3 to 6 may choose the Silver Birch program,
which includes a selection of novels and non-fiction. At the end
of the program,
participating students vote for their favourite Blue Spruce or Silver
Birch selection. Votes from students across the province are then
tallied and the authors of the winning entries are presented with
these much-coveted
awards at a special ceremony in May.
Please take the time to drop in after school if you would like to
explore our collection or learn more about our school library resources.
