STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

The staff and administration expect that Laurier students will:

  • Make an honest, consistent effort to do well in all subjects by using their abilities and doing their best work.
  • Prepare for all classes by bringing required materials and completed homework assignments.
  • Be responsible for any work missed in classes due to absence for illness or extra-curricular activities.
  • Display acceptable hall and classroom behaviour and observe all school rules and procedures.
  • Respect the rights and be considerate of the feelings of others in the school community by being courteous and responsible.
  • Resolve all interpersonal conflicts and difficulties through the use of dialogue, counselling, peer mediation, and other rational means.
  • Courteously identify themselves when requested by any staff member.
  • Stand still for the duration of the National Anthem.

Laurier Code of Conduct

The Code of Behaviour has been developed from the principles of:

  • respect for self and others
  • respect for the learning process
  • respect for safety
  • respect for property

A positive learning environment can be developed only if these basic principles are adhered to. Good behaviour and fair, firm and consistent progressive discipline help to ensure that Laurier is a safe place to learn and work.

Our Code of Behaviour reflects the belief that it is everyone's responsibility to promote a safe, respectful environment in partnership with the school, the home and the community.

Attendance and Absence Procedures

Students must be aware of the serious effect that absences from class can have on their progress and success in a semestered program. Students may fall behind quickly and find it very difficult to “catch up”. According to Ministry of Education regulations, a student is at risk of losing a credit if fewer than 110 hours of scheduled time are accumulated for a subject. Students are responsible for missed work due to any absence.

This year the computerized attendance system will be continued. Students may expect low marks, denial or removal of credit, and/or suspension if they have chronic attendance problems. Students who fall below the minimum course load requirements may be retired from the school. Teachers and administration will contact parents as problems arise.

Timetable Load for Student

  • In September all students with fewer than 24 credits will take 8 courses per year.
  • All graduating students will take 3 or 4 courses per semester and will not be permitted to drop to part-time status.
  • On very rare occasions, the Principal may permit a graduating student to drop from 3 to 2 courses.
  • Students with study periods should go to the cafeteria or library to work.

Arrivals

It is extremely important that students be at school and in all classes on time every day.

  • School begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. Students who are late for school should proceed directly to their Period 1 class. Students arriving after Period 1 must sign in at the main office with a note.
  • On the day they return the student must present a dated note to all teachers, signed by a parent or guardian, stating the period of time absent and the reason. The note should be left with the student’s Period 4 teacher who will send the note to the main office for filing. This note is necessary even if the parent or guardian has telephoned the school
  • Students 18 or over must provide the same information on a note signed by themselves or parent that states specific, clear and valid reasons for their absence.

Departures

When leaving during the day (9:00 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.) students must present a note to their teacher, and then to the Main Office at the time stated on the note. If an emergency arises, the student must report to the Main Office where a telephone call will be made to advise the parent. All students must sign out in the office when leaving.

Illness:  Students who become ill during the day must report to the Main Office. Students may leave only if signed out with parental approval.

The only students who are to be in the school after 4:00 p.m. are those supervised by a teacher in an extra-curricular activity or those receiving extra help.

Classroom Procedures

The day-to-day work in the classrooms at Laurier is the foundation of the education that students receive at school. Each student has the right to a positive learning environment. Any person who disrupts this environment infringes on the rights of other in the class.

Students who disrupt the progress of their classes (e.g. inappropriate behaviour, lateness, and excessive absence) may expect the following consequences,depending on the severity and persistence of the problem:

  • Discussion with teacher;
  • Detention with teacher;
  • Call home;
  • Meeting with a Vice-Principal;
  • Parental interview;
  • Temporary withdrawal from class;
  • Suspension from school;
  • Removal from the course

Lockers and Valuables

Lockers are loaned to students for their convenient storage of books and coats. All lockers will be issued through the Home Form Teacher or the Main Office. Changes of locks or lockers must be reported to the Main Office.

A locker is a student’s private area in the school but remains officially as school property. Individual lockers and combinations should not be shared. Students must use only thier assigned locker.

Valuables and large amounts of money should not be brought to school. The school accepts no responsibility for loss or theft of any article, either personal or school.

Changes of Address, Telephone, etc.

It is essential in the event of an emergency that we have updated records for contacting parents/guardians. The office must be informed immediately in writing if a change of address, telephone number, etc.

Excursions

All students are expected to participate in planned class excursions. Students will not have marks deducted for attendance when on a planned school excursion. Students are expected to be excellent representatives of Laurier on field trips and in our community.

Fire Alarms

All students should be aware that it is a very serious offence to set off a false fire alarm or to tamper with any safety equipment. In such cases the police will be involved and charges may be laid. A $350.00 fine for pulling a false fire alarm will be charged. An exit sign is posted in each room that students are required to use in case of fire. As soon as the alarm sounds, students must exit as quickly as possible, without running and follow all staff instructions. Once outside, students must be clear of the school building by a least 20 meters.

Lockdown Policy

Students must follow all the directions of all staff members during a Laurier Safety Alert (lockdown) for their own safety and for the safety of those around them. Students failing to do so will be dealt with by an administrator of the school and possibly the police.

Lost and Found

Access to the Lost and Found may be arranged through the Main Office.

Visitors

Parental visits are welcome any time. Friends or relatives of students are not to visit the school or attend classes. Visits to school property are limited to authorized persons only (current Laurier students, parents, Board employees). Any visitor to the school must report to the office. Young children are not to be brought to school at any time.

Accidents

Accidents of any nature must be reported to the supervising teacher or to the main office immediately. An accident report form must be completed.

Parking

There is limited student parking at the back of the school. Students who wish to bring an automobile to school must obtain a parking sticker from the Vice-Principal. Only 50 student parking spots are available. Students not following this policy may receive a parking ticket or have their cars towed from the school property.
