Special Awards

Marks to be used for scholarships/award applications MUST be earned at Leaside or through a Continuing Education program.  This also applies to University/College sponsored scholarships/awards not listed here.

 

Proficiency Awards

Proficiency Awards are granted to students in subject areas who have attained the highest standing and/or made a significant contribution to the program.

 

 

Special Awards

Special Awards recipients are graduating students and are selected by the Awards Committee in consultation with staff.  The following are the Special Awards:

 

 

Governor General’s Academic Medal (Bronze)

The Collegiate Bronze Medal is awarded to the student who achieves the highest overall average upon graduation from a diploma level secondary program (minimum two year, full-time duration).

 

 

Lieutenant-Governor’s Volunteer Award

This award is granted to a graduating student in recognition of exemplary student involvement in the community.

 

 

Principal’s Award for Student Leadership

The Principal’s Student Leadership Award is presented to a graduating student who demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities in school activities.

 

 

Norman McLeod Schloarship

The Norman McLeod Schloarship is awarded to a graduating student who demonstrated outstanding leadership in school activities.

 

 

David Ladkin Memorial Trophy

This trophy presented since 1953 in memory of David Ladkin is awarded to a young man in his graduating year that has demonstrated excellence in leadership, scholarship, athletics, and service to the community.

 

 

Gladys Heintz Trophy

This trophy is awarded to a young woman in her graduating year that has demonstrated excellence in leadership, scholarship, athletics, and service to the community.  Gladys Heintz was Head of Physical and Health Education, coached many girls’ teams and taught at Leaside from 1949 to 1977.

 

 

Jeff Crichton Award

This plaque is awarded to a student who exemplifies dedication, commitment and enthusiasm to the athletic program at Leaside High School.

 

 

Wayne Wessell Award

This award is presented to an athlete for outstanding achievement on the field of athletics while representing Leaside.

 

 

Betty Hughes Memorial World Languages Award

This award is given to the top student who has taken two languages in grade 12.

 

 

Betty Stewart Prizes in World Languages – French Immersion

This award is given to the top student in grade 12 Français

 

 

Betty Stewart Prizes in World Languages – Latin

This award is given to the top student in grade 12 Latin

 

 

French Immersion Social Science Award

This award is given to the student who has taken all five social science courses and has obtained the highest average.

 

 

Nancy Karrandjas Latin & Classical Studies Award

This award is given to a senior student who has excelled in Latin and Classical Civilization courses and a proven commitment to Classical Studies beyond the classroom.



East York Kiwanis Scholarship

This award is granted to a graduating student who has demonstrated high academic achievement in his/her final year.

 

 

Leaside-East York University Women’s Club Scholarship

The graduating student chosen to receive this award is selected in recognition of outstanding achievement.  The young woman who is proceeding to a degree program at university must also have demonstrated contribution within the school and community and will not have received any other awards.

 

 

Leaside Staff  Scholarship

This award is granted to a graduating student who has demonstrated character and outstanding contribution in his/her four years at Leaside.

 

 

Cyril and Phyllis Law Scholarship

This award is presented to a graduating student in recognition of outstanding scholarship.

 

Toronto Professional Fire Fighters Association Bursary
This award is granted to a graduating student entering a career, which serves the public in nursing or a related field.


Alumni Association Scholarship

This award is granted to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and has made an outstanding contribution to the life of the school.

 

 

Mary-Lynne Crosbie Stuart Scholarship

This award is granted to a graduating student who will be pursuing post-secondary studies in one of the following fields: geography, geology, earth sciences, environmental studies, forestry, urban planning, or geological engineering.  The recipient has also demonstrated outstanding contribution to the school/community. It is recommended that the student have completed grade 12 Geography.

 

 

Leaside High School Parent Council Award for Volunteerism

This award is granted to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to volunteerism.

 

 

Humphrey Family Community Service Award

This award is granted to a student who has selflessly made an exceptional contribution to the quality of life of another person during a particularly difficult life experience.

 

 

Adelino Vicentini Memorial Award in French Immersion

Adelino Vicentini, father of Enrico Vicentini (Assistant Curriculum Leader of French Immersion and World Languages) was a great lover of French language and literature and for many years did the calligraphy for the French Immersion Department.  This award will be given annually to the student obtaining the top mark in grade 12 Français.

 

 

Adelino Vicentini Memorial Award in Italian

Adelino Vicentini, father of Enrico Vicentini (Assistant Curriculum Leader of French Immersion and World Languages) learned Italian when he was twelve years old upon returning from France to complete his secondary studies.  In a short time he became an avid reader, writer and poet, and grew to love his second language as much as his first language.  This award will be given annually to the student obtaining the top mark in level 4 Italian.



Teresa and Adelino Vicentini Memorial Award

This award is named after the parents of  Enrico Vicentini, Assistant Curriculum Leader of French Immersion and World Languages.  Teresa and Adelino Vicentini always encouraged their children in their studies and to give back to the community.  This award will be given annually to a student who has studied both French and Italian and has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to volunteerism.

 

 

Rocky Yeung Memorial Award

This award is presented in memory of Rocky Yeung, a Leaside teacher of Latin and History. The recipient of this award must be a student of classics, classical civilization, history, or Latin. He/she must be pursuing post-secondary studies in classics, classical civilization, education, history, or Latin. The student exemplifies compassion, sense of community, patience and achievement/accomplishment. He/she must be involved in school and community and be well read and knowledgeable.



History Chronicle Award

This award is presented toa graduating student who has exhibited ongoing interest in Canadian and World Studies throughout their years at Leaside. This is generally a person who has taken the greatest number of History and Contemporary Studies courses and who has achieved the highest average in these courses.
