DRESS CODE - UPDATED
With the warm weather that has arrived, we would like to remind everyone that Leaside High School continues to be a place where students come to learn and to be part of a professional school community. Skimpy clothing and beach wear is not suitable at school and presents an uncomfortable atmosphere for others. We ask that all students wear appropriate attire for a learning environment. Please refer to the dress code page for reference of acceptable attire. Starting Tuesday, May 21, students who come to school dressed inappropriately will be sent home to change. Thank you for your support.
RETURN OF LOST ITEMS – THANK YOU!
Most recently, a couple of Leaside students returned significant amounts of money that had been found in the school. The money has been returned to the owners who were most grateful.
May is the month of integrity. To the students who turned the money in to the main office – you exemplify the many character attributes that as a community we value.
To all Leaside students – thank you for those acts of honesty, kindness, caring and integrity that you display on a daily basis. You never know when someone takes note and shares these positive anecdotes.
STUDENT TRAVEL AGENCY ALERT!!!
It has come to our attention from concerned parents that some of our secondary students are being approached by S-Trips, off school property, and are being offered incentives to act as “recruiters” for student trips. The S-Trip brochures use school names, and may give the impression to parents that these trips are sanctioned by the TDSB and supervised by school staff. It is important that we communicate to parents that these trips are not school sponsored or endorsed. If unsure, please contact the school to confirm if these trips are school sanctioned. This March Break we have two groups travelling overseas – one to Italy, France and Switzerland and the other to Turkey and Greece.

ARCHERY
On May 15, Leaside sent its archers to the Ontario High School Archery Invitational Tournament. Leaside had a great day and our arrows flew true. For the boys, Jihad El Sheikh came in first, Adam Thompson was second, and William Avey was sixth overall. The boys’ team was successful and came in first overall at the tournament. For the girls, Vicky Huang came in first, Sabrina Adair was second, and Masala Alleyne was fifth. Overall, the girls’ team was equally successful and they came in first at the tournament as well. Congratulations to all of our archers and their coach, Mr. Griffin!
DESIGN ON DUNDAS
Congratulations to all the participants in all three competitions which were held last week on Friday, May 10. A Leaside team finished in first place for the Popsicle Stick Bridge Design for Structural Integrity and Strength (Tensile Strength 585 lbs.) The second place team was only 290 lbs. strong. Way to go Leaside!

Both the boys’ and girls’ ball hockey teams participated in the Ontario Ball Hockey Association Tournament on May 8 and May 9. This year the Boys’ B Ball Hockey team and the Girls’ Ball Hockey Team were the 2013 Ball Hockey Champions! Congratulations to all the athletes and their coaches, Mr. Hughes and Mr. Miller.
This semester, the Grade 12 BAT Accounting class entered a video competition. As a class, the students designed, produced and filmed a two minute video answering the question, “What are you doing to get smarter about money?” We were informed this week that the entry submitted by Leaside won first place in Category Three (Secondary). The judges were most impressed with our students’ creativity and insightful responses to the question. Congratulations to all the students in the class and the support of their teacher Mrs. Mancuso for a winning video submission. The video can be viewed on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJs3LlApB6U
A MESSAGE REGARDING THE ON-LINE CODE OF CONDUCT
Hello everyone,
It is great to see that students are expressing their thoughts, ideas and opinions through social media networks. It is certainly a huge change from when I was in high school where students passed paper notes in class and called friends on a land line. Nonetheless, students must be aware when posting comments, pics, and/or videos that they must follow the TDSB’s On-Line Code of Conduct at all times. Therefore, any inappropriate postings in any social media networks will be immediately removed and students responsible for these postings would be subject to suspension and/or arrested for breaching the On-Line Code of Conduct. In some cases, post-secondary applications and/or scholarships have been revoked. Do not take a chance! Please note the following list of inappropriate postings (which is not limited to):
- Name-calling or threats
- Unwelcome remarks or slurs
- Obscene gestures or jokes
- On-Line harassment
- Derogatory or offensive materials
- Threats of outing someone (staff, student, community member)
- Intimidation or physical violence
- Or anything else that negatively affects an individual or group
Please note: These policies and procedures allow students to have the right to feel safe and welcome at Leaside and in the community. Be very aware when posting information that is personal as it is public for all to see. Should you have any questions and/or concerns, please contact Ms. Parise (VP) at: andrea.parise@tdsb.on.ca and/or call the Student Safety Line at: 416-395-7233 or www.tdsb.on.ca/safetyline. Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Ms. A. Parise
