Bas Balkissoon is a Trinidadian - Canadian Councillor in the City of Toronto. This means he works for the government of Toronto. The government of Toronto is in charge of the TTC, police, fire departments, and ambulances. This level of government also looks after parks and takes care of community centers. The City of Toronto Council consists of 44 councillors and the Mayor. The Council and the Mayor work together to make their decisions.
Before Bas was a Councillor, he worked hard as a community volunteer. He started a group called SHAFT (Scarborough Homeowners Alliance for Fair Taxation). He was the president of SHAFT. Bas and his group worked to help people in his community save money. The people in Bas' community were very thankful for all of his work. They wanted to make Bas their City Councillor.
Bas was first elected in 1988 as a Councillor in the former City of Scarborough. In 1997, the City of Scarborough became part of the City of Toronto. Bas was then elected to the new City of Toronto Council in 1997, again in 2000, and in 2003.
