The vocal music program at Rosedale Heights
offers young singers choral, apprenticeship and solo
opportunities. There are 3 choirs made up of the students from the grade
9 to 12 vocal courses.
The Rosedale Chamber Choir consists
mainly of senior vocal students. This choir acts as the core and mentor
choir for the grade 9 and 10 Rosedale Choir. The Rosedale
Women’s Choir consists mainly of girls in grade 9 and 10 vocal
classes. All choirs sing a variety of repertoire from Traditional World
and Folk music to Western European masters from hundreds of years ago.
All choirs perform at the Winter and Spring
Music Nights. All singers attend the extra rehearsals scheduled 4 or 5
weeks before each of these concerts.
In addition to the Music Nigts, Rosedale
Chamber Choir sings a special concert in November with the
Toronto Chamber Choir (TCC). This is a shared performance in which
each choir sings some repertoire on their own and some together. It is
a wonderful opportunity for Rosedale students to sing harder music with
the support of the adult voices. In addition, TCC’s conductor rehearses
with Rosedale students in a special workshop rehearsal. Some years,
Rosedale Chamber Choir is featured on one of the spring concerts of the
TCC’s regular concert season. Also, the Rosedale Chamber Choir performs
at special assemblies and events at Rosedale such as Open House, African
Heritage Assembly and Remembrance Day.
Toronto Chamber Choir
is an auditioned Toronto Choir which specialises in performing early
choral music from before 1750 or the end of the Baroque era. TCC is the
official adult mentor choir for Rosedale Heights. Each October, 1 or 2
vocal students audition to become apprentices. Upon acceptance,
apprentices attend all regular TCC rehearsals and concerts as a part of
the adult choir’s regular concert season. This program is so successful
that most of the apprentices chose to become full members of the adult
choir in subsequent years.
Some singers may wish to auditions for solo
opportunities. Each year, students sing solos with the various choirs,
with the Senior Band and with the October Musical Theatre show “Divas
and Divos Night”. This last show is a staged performance of musical
theatre solos, duets and trios from classic to modern Broadway shows.
