MUSIC @ SAM

With apologies to Shakespeare, if music be food of learning, then play on. From choir to jazz band, wind ensemble to senior orchestra, our music program is second to none! All students at SAM take music as part of their studies, and it shows! Just walk down the halls of our school and you'll hear the sweet sounds of brass being played or bows sliding across strings.

Music Monday 2013

On May 6 2013 S.A.M. took part in Music Monday, a nationwide event that has been happening for a number of years. It always falls on the first Monday of May. This year's event was very special as students across Canada joined Commander Hadfield, our Canadian astronaut on the Russian Space Station, in the performance of this year's song, "I.S.S. - Is Somebody Singing".

On Monday, February 14th, the Sir Alexander Mackenzie Wind Ensemble traveled to Le Parc Conference Centre to participate in the OBA (Ontario Band Association) Concert Band Festival. It is a yearly event which allows bands from various schools to come together to learn, communicate, and be judged in order to improve their musical talents.

VISUAL ART @ SAM

The visual arts department focuses on providing students with the skills and the knowledge to develop their creativity, as well as the ability to communicate with others through the visual language.

The focus of the art program is on social justice issues, ranging from the use of propaganda posters, crating graffiti pieces in a cultural context and looking at non traditional art forms such as tattooing. Some of the projects include, but are not limited to: abstract painting and drawing, one and and two-point perspective, clay self portraits, industrial toy design, figure drawing, relief printing, stencilling and silkscreening.

In addition to the curriculum the art department offers three extra curricular workshops: skateboard making, sewing club and mural club.

Stay tuned for upcoming pictures of the latest mural plus other goodies from the artsy kids!

DRAMA @ SAM

Drama is an essential part of the SAM curriculum. It helps build social relations and encourages risk taking through drama interpretations of contemporary and tranditional texts. This year, Ms. Schoemer's drama classes have entered the contest "Racism, Stop I!t (Ms. Schoemer's class won 1st place in this contest in 2009). Students worked on a one minute video that challenged racism on many conceptual levels.

In addition, students in Ms. Badescu's drama class are learning how to use stop animation to tell a story. This lenghty process involved taking each frame individually through point and click cameras. Imagine, a 30 second movie can have up to 900 individual shots!

DANCE @ SAM

The Dance curriculum @ SAM encourages students to break out of their shell and get "moving"! Working in groups of four to five, students are required to coreograph and perform a short dance routine in front of their peers. The dance and musical styles explored range from contemporary to hip hop and urban. This program also provides students opportunties to develop or extend an understanding of dance concepts through participation in various dance experiences.

The S.A.M. ballroom dancing competition took place on Wednesday, February 13 2013 in the gym. Both grade 7 and grade 8 students took part.
