Why is math important?
Mathematics has existed for as long as humanity has. It has shaped our society and culture for as far back as we can remember. It is the language of the world around us and is therefore a necessary part of our lives. Not understanding math is like not being able to speak english, and for this reason we strive to teach to children the language and teach them how it translates to the real world.
Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing are not enough anymore. The basic mechanics of mathematics shouldn't be all we teach out children. Numeracy is what will make a difference in our childrens futures. We want to create students that do more than simply know the answer. We want students that truly understand the problem.
