April 14, 2008
On April 11th, Harbourfront Centre once again hosted our annual TDSB Elementary Chess Finals. In order to earn a spot, schools in all four quadrants of the TDSB had to participate in qualifying tournaments throughout February and March. During the course of the event, all schools had to play every other school thus ensuring that each player played seven games. It was remarkable to observe the ability of our students to maintain their focus and concentration for well over five hours of play! Once again we were very fortunate to have excellent media coverage of the event provided by The Toronto Sun as well as by CBC and Global television.
Typically this event has a number of regular returnees and also a few newcomers. This year saw something remarkable happen however as all three defending champions were able to defend their titles! This has never happened before in the history of this event. What was also remarkable was the fair play put on display by all of our students. It was clearly evident that not only is the game of chess a wonderful tool to use to improve students’problem-solving, it is also a terrific way to build character. It is our sincere hope that once again the event was able to provide our students with opportunities not to only test their skills over the chessboard but also to create build friendships with students from other schools.
As far as the results are concerned the top three finishers in each age group are as follows:
Primary (Grades 1-3)
Champion: John Fisher
2nd: Seneca Hill
3rd: Gledhill
Junior: (Grades 4-6)
Champion: Seneca Hill
2nd: Palmerston
3rd: Bowmore
Middle School (Grades 7 & 8)
Champion: Deer Park
2nd: Islington
3rd: John Buchan
Congratulations go out to all participating teams! Our thanks also go out to all the coaches, parents and administrators who supported us throughout the season. Finally our gratitude go out to the organizing committee of Dale Davis, David Daly & Ted Winick for ensuring the smooth running of the event and for Harbourfront Centre for hosting the finals. See you in 2009!

Congratulations to our team 3A. The team came third in the Scholastic Team Tournament held on March 1. Well done, Yueyang, Megan, Richard and Brendan.
Although CMA had sent me the confirmation before the tournament, they had omitted our two K-3 teams. Sorry for the confusion on that day.
I have paid the entry fee for all the Seneca Hill teams. What you have to pay me back is to work hard in chess.
The G.4-6 team came first in the qualifier. Good Job.
The K-3 team qualified automatically to finals because there were only two teams entered. We are now trying to arrange a tournament with another qualified team. We presently don’t have any information of the Finals.
This tournament will be held on March 28 at Northview Heights Secondary School. Seneca Hill is invited to participate in the Junior Division (Under Grade 10). Derek, Jonathan, Reena, Danny and Stefan will represent the school.
Please visit the website: www.chess-math.org for your rating updates.
All tournaments, including the Thursday after school Program, Scholastic Team and Sunday Oriole Tournaments are rated.
Please note that ratings go up and down and it reflects only your approximate chess level. I suggest you not to worry too much about it.
Session 3 will continue on April 3 to June 5. There are 10 lessons, each from 3:45 to 5:45. Please submit a cheque of $150 payable to “Seneca Hill Chess Club” to me on March 20 or 27.

On January 10, 2008 the students of Seneca Hill P.S put on their thinking caps as they competed in the fifth annual Chess tournament. Each grade had its own separate players of separate skill levels.
