Shirley Street Public School is located in the vibrant community south west of
Dundas and Brock Streets. It was first built in 1881 as a
two-room school. The present building was constructed in 1963. The school serves nearly 200 students with over two-thirds of
the population coming from homes where English is not their
first language. The two largest non-English speaking groups
are Portuguese and Chinese with a recent increase in Vietnamese.
Shirley St. P.S. is an Integrated Extended Day school where
students stay 30 minutes longer each day in order to participate
in the International Languages Program, where they study Portuguese,
Spanish or Chinese. The school is also home to three Adult ESL
classes and a large Parenting and Literacy Centre. In addition, Shirley Street P.S. was one of the first two
schools to be involved in the former Toronto Board's Best
Practices School Project and is now an Early Years Literacy
Project School.
