What we're planning at Sir Adam Beck We have developed the following plans for this
year based on the feedback that we have received from a
number of student assessments, from our observations and
reflections on program and from feedback from parents.
Reading and Writing
Our school target is that 80% of our
students will meet or exceed the provincial standard in
reading.
While reading, students will
demonstrate ideas of some complexity, making inferences
and responding with information related to the text (Reasoning)
and will demonstrate the ability to use ideas in
different contexts by clearly and precisely supporting
them with personal knowledge (Communication).
When writing, students will show
evidence of a clear and logical plan or focus, develop
ideas with some complexity and see themselves as
competent writers and communicators.
We will consider strategies such as:
- Junior Reading Assessment
- Blooms Taxonomy
- alternate communication methods (
mapping, video, Hyper Studio)
- use of rubrics and exemplars for
assessment
- Curriculum Planner
- learning journals
- student conferences
- graphic organizers and story
mapping
- Literature Circles
We will continue
- a common two hour Literacy Block
to start each day
- Guided Reading with leveled texts
at student instructional level
- common grade planning time
- home reading program
- to focus resources, strategies and
support for all staff to ensure that all students
are receiving instruction at their level
- to assess each primary English
student in October and May with the Developmental
Reading Assessment to measure individual growth
- to participate in the Silver Birch
program for exemplary Canadian childrens
literature
- to create a leveled bookroom for
French Immersion
- to plan units which integrate
curricula and provide explicit connections to
personal experience.
Mathematics
In Mathematics we will concentrate on
the measurement strand and on communicating clear and
concise justifications for mathematical questions using
appropriate mathematical terms.
- Measurement Mondays
- experience with non-standard units
- wall charts, organizers
- use of proper vocabulary
- hands-on learning with
manipulative materials
- expressing mathematical reasoning
in words, pictures and numbers
