Behaviour Code

The Sir Adam Beck JS Behaviour Code complies with both the Provincial Code of Conduct and the Toronto District School Board's Safe School Policy. It was created with input from parents, staff and students in Spring 2001.

Rationale

The goal of Sir Adam Beck JS, an integral part of the South Etobicoke community, is to provide a safe, nurturing, respectful and positive learning environment that will enable all of its students to reach their fullest potential and become socially responsibile members of society.

In order to ensure this positive and peaceful school environment, there must be a clear understanding among parents, educators, community members and students as to what is or what is not appropriate behaviour within the school setting. The Behaviour Code includes prevention, intervention and safety strategies to help students develop appropriate social/personal skills and problem solving techniques that can be used whenever necessary both within the school environment as well as in the community.

Behaviour Expectations

  • Be Safe
  • Show Respect
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Prepared
  • Be on Time
  • Solve conflicts peacefully
  • Keep your hands to yourself and your feet on the ground

Where and When do our Behaviour Expectations Apply?

These expectations apply:

  • during regular school hours throughout the school and the playground

  • while under school supervision
  • during all school events, including events that occur before or after school
  • while on school buses
  • during excursions, field trips and other supervised events off school property

How to our Expectations relate to the lunchroom

If possible, the best choice for children is to have a healthy lunch at home. For those students who remain at school to eat lunch:

  • Students are expected to eat in designated lunchroom areas at designated times
  • Students are expected to remain on school grounds unless they provide written permission
  • Students are expected to respond to lunchroom attendants, both in the lunchroom and on the school yard, in a courteous and respectful manner
  • Participation in our lunch program depends upon acceptable behaviour and cooperation.
  • Unacceptable behaviour may result in a loss of participation for a period of time.

Dress Code

At Sir Adam Beck we set high standards for academic success, social development and behaviour. These standards are reflected in the degree of effort put into our studies, the respectful language we use, our consideration for others, and the manner in which we dress.

The following dress code maintains these high standards:

  • clothing or other items that could be interpreted as signifying gang association are not permitted
  • clothing with inappropriate words and pictures are not permitted
  • shoulders and stomach area must be covered at all times;
  • bottoms of tops must fall past tops of bottoms
  • shorts and skirts must not be shorter than the point of the thigh where the end of the thumb touches when the arm is extended naturally
  • tops with low necklines are not appropriate or adequate clothing
  • children are strongly encouraged to bring both an indoor and outdoor pair of shoes

  • Telephone call home: the teacher, vice-principal or principal may call a student’s parent.
  • School Meeting: the teacher, vice-principal or principal may request a meeting with the student’s parent.
  • Voluntary Withdrawal: a student may take a voluntary withdrawal from the classroom for a designated period of time which does not go into the student’s record.
  • Suspension: a student may be suspended from school for a designated period of time.

Zero Tolerance

The Province of Ontario and the Toronto District School Board believes that there should be appropriate consequences for inappropriate behaviour. In accordance with the Provincial and TDSB Safe School policies, Ecole Sir Adam Beck Junior School will not tolerate:

  • violence of any kind
  • verbal abuse in any form
  • the presence of an intruder
  • harmful, threatening or actual acts of violence

Most behaviour issues can be resolved within the classroom between the student and the classroom teacher or on the playground between the students and the supervising adult.
