Placement in French Language Programs

The French Immersion program offered in schools throughout the Toronto District School Board have been designated as "optional programs". This means that parents are provided with the choice of enrolling their children in French immersion programs.

Historically, most students in French Immersion are able to successfully complete the program; however, each year schools with French Immersion programs are faced with decisions as to the suitability of the placement of individual students.

At Ecole Sir Adam Beck Junior School, we begin a process of reviewing all students as they enter the program. The process involves numerous steps. Included are informal and formal observations, tests and assessments. The School Support Team meets on a regular basis and reviews the progress of individual students. Students with more pronounced difficulties may be referred to the psychologist for further assessment. Results of the psychological testing may indicate that the student needs to be referred to an Identification, Review and Placement Committee to discuss special needs.

This same process is followed for students in the English language program as well. We work closely with parents throughout this process.

Sir Adam Beck French Placement Protocol

Rationale

  • The movement of a child from a French Immersion to an English language program in the middle of the school year leads to disruptions to the child and to the receiving classroom.
  • The English language classes at Sir Adam Beck continue, for the most part, to be fully subscribed and at the limits set by the School Staffing Model.

Parents who elect to have their child placed in the Sir Adam Beck French Immersion program should be aware that the placement is for a minimum of one year. During the year, student progress will be reviewed on a regular basis. This review will be with parental consultation. At the end of the school year the School Support Team may recommend that a child be placed in the English language program. Students leaving the French Immersion program will return to their home school. Parents who have concerns about their child's placement or progress in the French Immersion program should contact the teacher and the school office.
