| I
would like to welcome you to Westmount Junior School.
Westmount Junior School is located in the west area of the Toronto
District School Board near Royal York and Eglinton Avenue. It opened
in January 1960 and currently houses over 350 students in the one
story building. The school sits on a large parcel of land that is adjacent
to park and recreational facilities. The six primary classrooms surround
a large open area which is used for science and art activities. We
have a computer lab set up within the Resource Centre. There are 21 teaching
staff at the school, including a full time French, SERT (Communications)
teacher, and an ESL staff member. One of the unique features of the
school is the courtyard that has a wide variety of plants, and a small
pond. Staff and members of the Westmount School Council maintain this
lovely area, which is used as a teaching tool for many classes.
Westmount has a very large area from which it draws students that
are bussed to school. We are fortunate to have a diverse student population
with a wide variety of different languages and cultures represented
in our school community. Approximately 48% of our students speak a
primary language other than English. Westmount Junior School prepares
children from a large multi-cultural community for future success.
With confidence, our diverse learners acquire the academic skills of
literacy, numeracy and technology as well as the social skills of problem
solving and cooperation. Proudly working together, our parents, community
and staff are dedicated to ensure a stimulating and safe learning environment
for each child. Westmount is currently refocusing our efforts on literacy
to ensure that all students have the necessary skills to succeed.
We provide a secure, caring and nurturing learning environment "to
enable all students to reach high levels of achievement and to acquire
the knowledge skills and values they need to become responsible members
of a democratic society." We know that children learn best when
the school and parents work closely together to support each other
and the learning of our students.
"It takes an entire village to raise a child.".
